I collaborated with Oscar-winning documentarian Terry Sanders who had just directed “Fighting for Life” about American military doctors, nurses, and medics on the front lines in the Iraq war.
The idea of a “Battle Surgeon” who flies into combat zones and behind enemy lines to give life-saving care to wounded soldiers and civilians turned into a passion project. In Chris Koelle we found an illustrator whose stark, gritty style created a raw aesthetic that proved an elegant fit for this physical, emotional, and spiritual adventure set in the mountains of Afghanistan.
